McKinley’s comprehensive array of programs and services – which touch nearly 1,500 lives annually – include short term residential treatment program (STRTP), Foster Care, Adoptions, Mental Health Services and Special Education. The Position: The Substance Abuse Disorder Counselor (SUD) plays a vital role in providing support to clients in the STRTP program who struggle with substance abuse and behavioral disorders. The SUD counselor is responsible for assessing clients' mental, emotional, and physical health related to addiction, designing individualized treatment plans, and guiding clients through recovery. The counselor will also help clients develop coping mechanisms, transition out of treatment, and sustain long-term recovery.
Compensation and Benefits:
Our pay range is $66,560 - $70,000 annually based on experience.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- State certification or licensure as a Substance Abuse Counselor (e.g., CADC, LAADC, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with clients who have substance use disorders, preferably in a residential or therapeutic setting.
- Knowledge of co-occurring disorders, addiction treatment methods, and relevant legal and ethical considerations in substance abuse counseling.
- Experience working with adolescents or families in a therapeutic environment is preferred.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and evidence-based interventions.
- Google Suites; Microsoft Office; general keyboarding skills
- Ability to learn and use mental health software (Weligent).
- Must pass a pre-employment physical examination
- Must have the ability to commute to various sites, including off-campus, and have the ability to physically restrain children if needed.

Key Responsibilities:
- Assess the client's readiness for treatment and diagnose substance use and behavioral disorders.
- Collaborate with clients and their families to create personalized recovery plans, setting measurable goals for treatment progress.
- Assist clients in identifying negative behaviors or patterns and developing strategies for managing triggers and stressors that contribute to their addiction.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions to address substance abuse and co-occurring mental health challenges, encouraging self-awareness and positive behavioral changes.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records of clients' treatment plans, progress, and outcomes in accordance with agency policies and legal requirements.
- Connect clients with additional resources, such as job placement services, and support groups, as part of their holistic recovery plan.
- Provide immediate support and guidance during crisis situations to prevent relapse or further deterioration of clients’ mental and emotional health.
- Participate in the agency’s Quality Improvement plan as assigned.
- Other related duties as assigned.
